I want a sculpture to be more than the
sum of time and materials that go into
making each piece. It has to speak to
something about the world.... show us our
differences and what makes us the same;
doing so in a visually compelling way. We
should want to look at an artwork...
contemplate... take it inside us... and
carry the memory of it away with us.
I feel fortunate to have been creating
sculpture for twenty years now. In that
time I have made large-scale public
sculpture, modeled portraits in all sizes
for individuals as well as for public and
private organizations. Many more of my
sculptures were created purely in answer
to, or in partial answer to, questions
about the complexities of life and living.
With my latest figurative sculptures, a
series I call "The Eggxiety Series --
Women, Kids, and Eggs”, I’m working to
express the experience and emotional
depths of parenting... intimate
observations of motherhood – the
boundless love, obsessions, manias,
protectiveness, intense nurturing,
doting, real and imagined fears, and
endless anxieties. And simultaneous to
all the mothering, the mother’s need to
retain and pursue her individuality, her
identity outside of a consuming family
role.
